Taean Tulip Festival

Korea is ripe with festivals for almost any occasion and any season. Though I can’t seem to keep any unsuspecting plant life that finds itself coming home with me alive, I will always go out of my way to photograph flowers, which is what led us to the Taean Tulip Festival. When I first started in photography years ago, the first workshop I ever took was macro photography with flowers and I still find myself wandering to flowers and taking photos of them today.

Like most weekend activities in Korea, make sure you arrive early! It was a two hour drive from Pyeongtaek to Taean and by the time we arrived at 9:30 AM, the parking lot was already filling up. When we left, cars were lined up for miles to get in.

We spent about two hours there with friends, meandering the different themed floral displays throughout the park. I took the obligatory flower photos with my daughter and attempted to grab snaps of my extremely active and very not interested in the camera toddler.

The festival has proclaimed photo opportunities throughout the park and when you look around there is no shortage of images being taken by phone or by camera, myself included.

There are not just tulips at the festival, there are a myriad of other flowers as well, but I am the John Snow of identifying their origins, I know nothing. What I do know is that we had great weather, the event is very kid friendly and there are a variety of tents and vendors set up with fried deliciousness you can eat on the way out of the festival.

The festival usually starts in mid April and runs for two to three weeks in conjunction with when the flowers are in bloom. The best way to know the anticipated schedule is to check online with Korea Flower Park in early April and plan your visit next spring accordingly.
