Beomeosa Temple
Located at the foot of Geumjeongsan Mountain, Beomeosa Temple is a stunning temple near Busan that offers both beautifully ornate temples and lush grounds. To call it picturesque doesn’t seem to do it justice. We visited on a Sunday and were greeted with the melodious sounds of monks and Buddhists worshipping all around us.
Beomeosa dates back to 678 A.D when “the famed monk Uisang found Beomeosa Temple in the 18th year of King Munmu of the Silla Dynasty”. Most of the temples original buildings were destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and were rebuilt in 1613 under the Joseon Dynasty.*
Aside from being one of the temples you must see when you visit Busan, if you are interested in learning more about Buddhism, you can enroll in their temple stay program where you can participate in Buddhist ceremonies, experience a temple tour and tea ceremony, learn how to string prayer beads and so much more.
There is no fee to visit but we did have to pay a small fee to park (3,000 won). We visited at the end of September so the foliage was just starting to change, but this temple would be stunning to visit in late October or in the spring (apparently there is a large wisteria display you can walk through). No matter when you decide to visit, you will not be disappointed!
