Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

The cooler temperatures have descended upon Germany, making it the ideal time to plan a visit to the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival. Started in 1997, this celebration of the almighty gourd moved to the grounds of the Ludwigsburg Castle in 2000. Featuring 450,000 pumpkins in over 600 varieties, this festival is the largest pumpkin festival in Germany. It is touted as the "Largest Pumpkin Festival in the World." The best thing about this yearly festival is its proximity to Stuttgart, which is simply 30 minutes away by car.

Ludwigsburg Palace

This year's theme is notable women, so you will see the likenesses of Marge Simpson, Frieda, Elsa, Cleopatra and many more. The sculptures typically have a wood and wire base, and the pumpkins, primarily sourced from Ludwigsburg, are attached via zip ties and wire. Every year, there is a new theme, along with various activities happening throughout the duration of the festival.

The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival offers a wide range of activities, from the thrilling pumpkin regatta to the traditional pumpkin carving and weighing of the pumpkins from the region. The celebration culminates with the smashing of the pumpkins at the end of the festival to get their seeds for the following year. But that's not all. You can also indulge in various pumpkin dishes like pumpkin soup, maultaschen (ravioli), spaetzle, ice cream, prosecco, roasted pumpkin seeds, and more. If you are a fan of all things pumpkin, you will not want to miss this event.

The festival is fantastic for all travelers and families. Arrive early to get prime parking nearby and avoid the noon-time rush of the crowds. If you can, go during the week when it's pretty peaceful, and you can take your time while walking around. At the end of your visit, pick out a pumpkin to take home with you and enjoy!
