Last weekend I attended the opening for a new exhibition at Art and Adventure in Pyeongtaek. The exhibition features beautiful modern Korean Folk Art, or “Minhwa” by artist Kim Kyung-hee and works by calligraphy artist Park Hee-sun. Minhwa are colorful, unconventional artworks often featuring supernatural animals such as tigers, dragons or cranes.

About the Artists

Artist Kim Kyung-hee explores various styles under the theme of the moon jar. She has created modern moon jar paintings with a unique interpretation of the 18th-century white porcelain moon jar from the Joseon Dynasty. The round and generous shape of the moon jar symbolizes daily happiness viewed through the eyes of Kim Kyung-hee.

Artist Park Hee-sun, reinterprets traditional paintings in a modern way, including Hojakdo, Chaekgado, and Munbaedo. Her works possess the charm of flowers and butterflies representing love and affection, as well as animals symbolizing the protection of family with peace and happiness. These works attract viewers with their simple yet profound meaning.

Art & Adventure Gallery was opened by Janice Heo in the fall of 2023. Early exhibitions featured landscape paintings by Andy Kim (Kim Myung-sik), and Hanji collage paintings by Korean painter Cho Hee-kyung.

Janice says, “We embarked on this journey with a vision to become a space for communication and creation, promoting the beauty of Korea's unique culture and art both domestically and internationally. Our aim is to foster art community growth by providing a platform for exchanges between artists and art enthusiasts. We dream of connecting people through art. In the future, we plan to showcase a diverse range of Korean artworks, including ceramics, embroidery, mother of pearl along with Korean paintings.”
